Cashier Quick Start Guide

Everything you need to know for your first shift as a cashier.

Before Your First Shift

Get Your Login

  1. Ask your manager for your login credentials
  2. Your manager will assign you a cash drawer
  3. Your login works on any POS terminal

Know Your Station

  • Your register location
  • Where the cash drawer is
  • Backup supplies (receipt paper, bags)
  • Manager call button location

Starting Your Shift

Opening Your Drawer

  1. Log in to the POS terminal
  2. Manager assigns your drawer
  3. Count opening cash with manager
  4. Confirm the count matches
  5. Sign to accept the drawer

Taking Counter Orders (5 Steps)

Step 1: Greet the Customer

  • Make eye contact and smile
  • "Hi! Welcome to [Restaurant]. What can I get for you?"

Step 2: Enter the Order

  1. Tap New Order (or it starts automatically)
  2. Select Counter as order type
  3. Tap items as customer orders
  4. Select modifiers when needed

Step 3: Confirm the Order

  1. Read back the order to the customer
  2. "So that's a large combo with no pickles, correct?"
  3. Make any corrections

Step 4: Process Payment

  1. Tap Pay when order is complete
  2. Announce the total: "That'll be $12.47"
  3. Select payment method (Cash, Card, Wallet)
  4. Complete the transaction

Step 5: Finish

  1. Hand receipt and order number
  2. "Your order number is 47. We'll call you when it's ready!"
  3. Ready for the next customer

Cash Payments

Processing Cash

  1. Customer hands you cash
  2. Enter amount received (or tap exact amount buttons)
  3. System shows change due
  4. Count change back to customer

Counting Change Back

Count UP from the total to the amount given:

Total: $12.47, Customer gave: $20.00 "12.47, 12.50 (3 pennies), 12.75 (quarter), 13 (quarter), 14 (dollar), 15 (dollar), 20 (five)"

Cash Tips

  • Accept bills facing the same direction
  • Keep large bills on top until transaction completes
  • Never put large bills in drawer until change is given

Card Payments

Chip/Tap Cards

  1. Tap Card on the payment screen
  2. Direct customer to card reader
  3. "You can insert or tap your card"
  4. Wait for approval
  5. Print/email receipt

Manual Entry

If card won't read:

  1. Tap Manual Entry
  2. Enter card number, expiration, CVV
  3. Get manager approval if required
  4. Complete transaction

Digital Wallets

Apple Pay, Google Pay:

  1. Customer taps phone on reader
  2. Wait for approval beep
  3. Transaction complete

Common Situations

Order Modifications

Customer changes mind:

  1. Tap item in order
  2. Tap Remove or modify
  3. Confirm change

Adding items after payment started:

  1. Tap Cancel Payment
  2. Add items
  3. Start payment again

Price Check

"Hey Maximus, what's the price of a large combo?"

Or tap the item in the menu to see price.

Item Not Found

  1. Search: Type item name in search bar
  2. Ask manager if truly not available
  3. Offer alternatives

Customer Complaint

  1. Stay calm and listen
  2. Apologize for the issue
  3. Call manager for refunds or comps
  4. Don't argue with the customer

Voids and Corrections

Voiding an Item

Before payment:

  1. Tap the item in the order
  2. Tap Remove
  3. Item is removed

Voiding Entire Order

Before payment:

  1. Tap Options or More
  2. Tap Void Order
  3. Select reason
  4. Confirm void

After Payment (Refund)

Requires manager:

  1. Tap Refund or call manager
  2. Manager enters PIN
  3. Select items to refund
  4. Process refund to original payment

Cash Drawer Operations

Opening the Drawer

Drawer opens automatically for:

  • Cash payments
  • Cash refunds
  • Paid ins/outs

Manual open:

  1. Tap Drawer icon
  2. Tap Open Drawer
  3. Enter reason
  4. Drawer opens

For business expenses (rare, need manager):

  1. Tap DrawerPaid Out
  2. Enter amount and reason
  3. Get manager approval
  4. Take cash and receipt

Cash Drop

When drawer gets too full:

  1. Manager initiates drop
  2. Count excess cash together
  3. Place in safe bag
  4. Sign the slip

End of Shift

Closing Your Drawer

  1. Count all cash in drawer
  2. Separate by denomination
  3. Compare to system expected
  4. Report any variance
  5. Sign closeout slip

  2. Both sign transfer slip
  3. They accept responsibility

Troubleshooting

Card Declined

Never tell the customer the specific reason their card was declined. Simply say "the card was not accepted" and suggest trying another payment method.

  1. Ask customer to try again
  2. Suggest different card
  3. Offer cash payment option

Receipt Printer Jam

  1. Open printer cover
  2. Remove stuck paper
  3. Reload paper roll
  4. Close cover and test

System Frozen

  1. Wait 10 seconds
  2. If still frozen, call manager
  3. Use backup paper system if needed

Long Line

  1. Stay focused and calm
  2. Call for backup help
  3. Keep orders accurate (faster than fixing mistakes)
  4. Smile - customers see your stress

Customer Service Tips

  1. Greet everyone - Even if they're not ready
  2. Make eye contact - Shows you're paying attention
  3. Repeat orders back - Catches mistakes early
  4. Thank customers - As they leave
  5. Stay positive - Even when busy

Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Keep your drawer neat
  • Count change carefully
  • Ask for help when unsure

  • Report shortages immediately

Don't

Never share your login credentials or leave your cash drawer open. Your login ties all transactions to you -- any discrepancies will be your responsibility.

  • Accept torn/damaged bills without manager
  • Argue with customers
  • Use your phone at the register
