Cashier Quick Start Guide
Everything you need to know for your first shift as a cashier.
Before Your First Shift
Get Your Login
- Ask your manager for your login credentials
- Your manager will assign you a cash drawer
- Your login works on any POS terminal
Know Your Station
- Your register location
- Where the cash drawer is
- Backup supplies (receipt paper, bags)
- Manager call button location
Starting Your Shift
Opening Your Drawer
- Log in to the POS terminal
- Manager assigns your drawer
- Count opening cash with manager
- Confirm the count matches
- Sign to accept the drawer

Taking Counter Orders (5 Steps)
Step 1: Greet the Customer
- Make eye contact and smile
- "Hi! Welcome to [Restaurant]. What can I get for you?"
Step 2: Enter the Order
- Tap New Order (or it starts automatically)
- Select Counter as order type
- Tap items as customer orders
- Select modifiers when needed
Step 3: Confirm the Order
- Read back the order to the customer
- "So that's a large combo with no pickles, correct?"
- Make any corrections
Step 4: Process Payment
- Tap Pay when order is complete
- Announce the total: "That'll be $12.47"
- Select payment method (Cash, Card, Wallet)
- Complete the transaction
Step 5: Finish
- Hand receipt and order number
- "Your order number is 47. We'll call you when it's ready!"
- Ready for the next customer
Cash Payments
Processing Cash
- Customer hands you cash
- Enter amount received (or tap exact amount buttons)
- System shows change due
- Count change back to customer
Counting Change Back
Count UP from the total to the amount given:
Total: $12.47, Customer gave: $20.00 "12.47, 12.50 (3 pennies), 12.75 (quarter), 13 (quarter), 14 (dollar), 15 (dollar), 20 (five)"
Cash Tips
- Accept bills facing the same direction
- Keep large bills on top until transaction completes
- Never put large bills in drawer until change is given
Card Payments
Chip/Tap Cards
- Tap Card on the payment screen
- Direct customer to card reader
- "You can insert or tap your card"
- Wait for approval
- Print/email receipt
Manual Entry
If card won't read:
- Tap Manual Entry
- Enter card number, expiration, CVV
- Get manager approval if required
- Complete transaction
Digital Wallets
Apple Pay, Google Pay:
- Customer taps phone on reader
- Wait for approval beep
- Transaction complete
Common Situations
Order Modifications
Customer changes mind:
- Tap item in order
- Tap Remove or modify
- Confirm change
Adding items after payment started:
- Tap Cancel Payment
- Add items
- Start payment again
Price Check
"Hey Maximus, what's the price of a large combo?"
Or tap the item in the menu to see price.
Item Not Found
- Search: Type item name in search bar
- Ask manager if truly not available
- Offer alternatives
Customer Complaint
- Stay calm and listen
- Apologize for the issue
- Call manager for refunds or comps
- Don't argue with the customer
Voids and Corrections
Voiding an Item
Before payment:
- Tap the item in the order
- Tap Remove
- Item is removed
Voiding Entire Order
Before payment:
- Tap Options or More
- Tap Void Order
- Select reason
- Confirm void
After Payment (Refund)
Requires manager:
- Tap Refund or call manager
- Manager enters PIN
- Select items to refund
- Process refund to original payment
Cash Drawer Operations
Opening the Drawer
Drawer opens automatically for:
- Cash payments
- Cash refunds
- Paid ins/outs
Manual open:
- Tap Drawer icon
- Tap Open Drawer
- Enter reason
- Drawer opens
Paid Outs
For business expenses (rare, need manager):
- Tap Drawer → Paid Out
- Enter amount and reason
- Get manager approval
- Take cash and receipt
Cash Drop
When drawer gets too full:
- Manager initiates drop
- Count excess cash together
- Place in safe bag
- Sign the slip
End of Shift
Closing Your Drawer
- Count all cash in drawer
- Separate by denomination
- Compare to system expected
- Report any variance
- Sign closeout slip

Handing Off
If someone takes over your drawer:
- Count together
- Both sign transfer slip
- They accept responsibility

Troubleshooting
Card Declined
Never tell the customer the specific reason their card was declined. Simply say "the card was not accepted" and suggest trying another payment method.
- Ask customer to try again
- Suggest different card
- Offer cash payment option
Receipt Printer Jam
- Open printer cover
- Remove stuck paper
- Reload paper roll
- Close cover and test
System Frozen
- Wait 10 seconds
- If still frozen, call manager
- Use backup paper system if needed
Long Line
- Stay focused and calm
- Call for backup help
- Keep orders accurate (faster than fixing mistakes)
- Smile - customers see your stress
Customer Service Tips
- Greet everyone - Even if they're not ready
- Make eye contact - Shows you're paying attention
- Repeat orders back - Catches mistakes early
- Thank customers - As they leave
- Stay positive - Even when busy
Do's and Don'ts
Do
- Keep your drawer neat
- Count change carefully
- Ask for help when unsure

Don't
Never share your login credentials or leave your cash drawer open. Your login ties all transactions to you -- any discrepancies will be your responsibility.
- Accept torn/damaged bills without manager
- Argue with customers
- Use your phone at the register
