Modifiers & Special Requests

Customize orders to meet guest preferences and dietary needs.

Understanding Modifiers

Modifiers are options that customize menu items. They come in two types:

Adding Modifiers

During Item Selection

  1. Tap a menu item
  2. If modifiers exist, a screen appears
  3. Select required options first (highlighted)
  4. Choose any optional add-ons
  5. Tap "Add to Order"

After Item is in Cart

  1. Tap the item in your cart
  2. Tap "Edit"
  3. Change or add modifiers
  4. Tap "Update"

Required Modifiers

These must be selected before the item can be added:

Required modifiers show a red asterisk (*) and the "Add" button is disabled until selected.

Special Requests & Notes

For requests not covered by standard modifiers:

Adding a Note

  1. Tap the item in your cart
  2. Tap "Add Note"
  3. Type the request
  4. Tap "Save"

Good Notes

  • "Birthday - please write Happy Birthday on plate"
  • "Extra crispy"
  • "Sauce on the side"
  • "Cut in half for sharing"

Allergies & Dietary Restrictions

Flagging Allergies

Allergy Safety

Always flag allergies to protect guests. Incorrect allergen handling can cause severe allergic reactions and be life-threatening. Never guess -- when in doubt, check with the kitchen.

  1. Tap the item in cart
  2. Tap "Allergy Alert"
  3. Select the allergen(s):
    • Peanuts/Tree Nuts
    • Shellfish
    • Dairy
    • Gluten
    • Eggs
    • Soy
    • Other (specify)
  4. Tap "Save"

What Happens

  • Kitchen sees a prominent red allergy banner
  • Staff are alerted to use clean equipment
  • The allergen is printed on the ticket

Checking Item Ingredients

  1. Long-press any menu item
  2. Tap "View Details"
  3. See ingredients and allergen information

Common Dietary Requests

Quantity Modifiers

Multiple Items

To add more than one of the same item:

  1. Tap the item
  2. Use the +/- buttons to adjust quantity
  3. Or tap quantity number and type directly

Split Items

For items to be shared or split:

  1. Add the item
  2. Tap "Split" option
  3. Choose how many ways to split

Modifier Groups

Some items have modifier groups with rules:

"Choose One" Group

Select exactly one option. Example: Steak temperature - must pick one.

"Choose Up To X" Group

Select zero to X options. Example: Choose up to 3 pizza toppings.

"Choose At Least X" Group

Must select minimum options. Example: Choose at least 2 sides.

Removals typically don't reduce the price -- the base price includes standard ingredients.


Troubleshooting

"Required modifier missing"

The item needs a selection before it can be added.

  1. Look for options with red asterisks
  2. Make a selection
  3. Try adding again

Modifier not available

Some modifiers may be 86'd (out of stock):

  1. Grayed-out options are unavailable
  2. Suggest alternatives to guest
  3. Check with kitchen if unsure

Guest wants something not listed

  1. Check if a note can capture the request
  2. If it affects prep or pricing, ask a manager
  3. Manager can add custom modifiers if needed

Best Practices

  1. Read modifiers aloud - Confirm with guest
  2. Double-check allergies - Ask again if mentioned
  3. Use notes sparingly - Modifiers are clearer for kitchen
  4. Know your 86'd items - Check before suggesting
  5. Communicate special requests - Verbally tell kitchen for complex orders
